How much time do you spend working on your PhD?

I've had friends who have got through on 3-4 hours a day, although they have been mad geniuses. Then again I've known people who have done nothing else, but then they are the sort who have no social skills and never had much life beforehand. But yeah, the best advice i was given is 'full time job + overtime as necessary', I don't think that's a bad guide.

BBSRC funding

The DTAs this year are 12K basic, unless you have CASE or enhanced studentship then it will be more. And don't forget you can also earn up to your tax allowance from tutoring etc to exploit the tax free nature of everything really well. We're in the money ! Who would want to do a real job when they're giving it away !?!?

How do you find out a supervisor is good
G

The number of publication could be an effective way of determing the goodness of a supervisor, but other factors such as the social environment and interest of the supervisor in the PhD topic in question can be important. It is surprising to know that supervision in some high universities in the UK leaves much be desired. The big name profs simply don't have time for their students.

I share a house at the moment with two lads doing PhDs. They say it should be treated as a full time job but they are both in first yr of PhD and dont quite match this time allowance. If you can do 40 hrs a week I would imagine you would be fine. If you are looking to scrape it, 4-5 hrs a day may be what you are looking at.

Interest in PhD topic. Essential?

Thanks Mia and Chloe. I certainly will be concentrating on this dissertation. It is also comforting to know I am not the only one in this position.
Cheers

Treat it as a full time job, so about 40 hours per week. as your project picks up, you may need to put in extra hours at home
