Totally hopeless?
G

I've always wanted to do my PhD in the UK, but reading posts from people struggling for funding makes me lose my confidence. My plan was to come to UK and volunteer in a lab for a bit and if we liked each other then continue to do my PhD there. Supposing the lab head would want me to stay, what do you think of my chances of getting full funding? I'm a molecular genetics student and an EU national.

Anyone know of a good masters in Immunology?

Telephone interview
G

I had 2 telephone interviews last month (physics)... on the down side its hard to form a connection over the phone but it tends to be easier by phone as it will probably only be with the supervisor and not with other department staff - Also if its a technical course, you can have summary sheet in front of you. Do you best, if they want you the fact its by telephone won't matter!

first week!
G

Potentially stupid question, but I wondered if anyone could give me an idea of what to expect during my first week or two of a PhD? Im due to start in october and the uni has an "induction programme", but just wondered if anyone knew what this is likely to involve?!

Industry sponsored pHD

Are international students eligible for CASE or CAST studentships?

I assume you are international student. As anton said do basic preparation. It depends on supervisors. Is this a university funded project Industry? May be you could read up on sponsoring body.. Hope this helps

Self Funding
G

Well, you need to make up £3,100 (I think) per year in tuition fees. You also have to pay for the things you use and a place to live for 3 years so you'd probably need, as a bare minimum about £10,000. If you have the money, you simply need to write to departments saying that you want to fund one yourself and your research interests. Look through some of the ads here that say no funding available

MPhil vs. PhD
G

Most students sign on for a MPhil and are then transferred to a PhD, on satisfactory progress. You could see how things go in the first year and then decide what route to take. A PhD will give you better income and quicker promotion!!

S, What Uni is this and what area of research have you applied for. Sometimes it depends on unis but try and do the basic prep. Read any final year project you did. Why do you want to pursue this project? If they have given you references (journals)read them.

MPhil vs. PhD

MPhil degrees are made of paper, so I wouldn't bother
