What area of research have you applied for and which uni has invited you for interview? The questions usually depends on area of research and individual supervisors?

Publishing as undergraduate
G

theres nothing to stop you publishing a theoretial paper as an undergraduate, if you come up with something original which is well written. it is just very unlikely that as an undergraduate you will have the necessary expertise and breadth and depth of knowledge to be able to contribute to the literature. but if you come up with something, you can in principle submit it.

Dear PhD team
G

You need to check the terms of the studentship, but the usual arrangment with department funding is a fee-waiver plus a bursary for living expenses, in return for teaching duties. Its highly unlikely that if they are funding you, they are going to charge you fees.

which uni??
G

It depends on what you do. The truth is, the league tables for research give a different ranking and even if a university has a high score for research, the department you apply for may be lower than most. With a PhD, it's also important who supervises you. a big name in the field can be a real advantage and a small name can become bigger. and so will you. It's still an advantage to come out of a place like Cambridge with a PhD though.

When to apply for a PhD?
G

Well, PhDs can be very competitive and funding for them can be too. It's recommended that you apply in November December time. That way, the person you apply to work with has time to put you forward as a PhD candidate early on and has more chance of getting funding. You can apply later, but I'd recommend no later than March. By this time, a number of supervisors are unable to apply for funding, but you can apply for one all the way up until next september if there's funding available

Well, dress. You should dress vaguely smart. Remember, you're trying to impress these people. Shirt, tie, trousers. perhaps not a suit. Thing with labs is they tend to be fairly casual places to work. Depends on the person. Do you have a filephoto? See what they're wearing.

In terms of what to decide as a research topic, your masters could prove invaluable, mine certainly did. I changed my mind completely with what I wanted to do. And don't be afraid to ask your lecturers on your masters course if you learn something and want to know more about it as a possible direction - the more information you have, the better.

Phd in Economics
G

Economic Growth has not been able to reduce poverty in Pakistan and India, infact there are certain other key areas which should be developed into an idea combination with economic growth in order to achieve povertry reduction.
This is my topic of Phd, I would welcome comments. moreover if somebody can inform me about the useful website and readings on this topic i will be highly obliged.

I have been invited for a PhD interview. I have the option of face-to-face or phone interview. Questions: which one would you chose (why?). What sorts of questions should I expect? Dressing code?

When to apply for a PhD?
G

I am starting an MSc course this September and I would like to go on to study for a PhD.

At the moment my interests in my chosen field are quite broad. I was hoping that as the course progressed it would give me more of an idea about the specific area of research I would like to follow.

However, I have been told that the best time to apply for a PhD starting next year is early on in this academic year, i.e. November/December.

How can I decide on a research topic? Can I apply later?

miserable
G

yes, that was me. thanks for tha opinions guys.

thesis - scared
G

Book Chapter Publication
G

Well, I would've thought that being selected for a book might way more in your favour. To write a book chapter takes a certain element of general knowledge in a subject, rather than focussed knowledge.it may be better for a teaching job, however, a published research paper I feel would be better suited for someone going into research

which uni??

Does it matter which university you gain your phd from?? Are phd's from lower ranking universities of less value than higher ranking universities??
