Is M.Sci enough?
G

Well, officially, all you need is a 2:1 or above on a bachelors course. An MSci would be better and a postgrad MSc or MRes would be better still. Start applying for PhDs in November/December, if you don't get anywhere, you can always apply for a postgrad masters and do a PhD after that, but that's an expensive route

Publishing as undergraduate

Well, the usual way that you get published as an undergrad is on your final year project. If you score fairly well (Usually 80%+) the university will usually put your paper forward to be published. I tried, unfortunately my results weren't good enough. Alternatively, you could write a review article and submit it yourself. The best place to do that is with the royal society. go to their home pae and they explain how to prepare it and submit.

Get experienced

Have you tried contacting labs you are interested and asking if they can take you on for a couple of weeks work experience. Or maybe get a bar job to subsidise doing unpaid lab work, I've done this and my supervisor applied for funding to pay me once he saw how enthusiastic I was.

Cambridge LLM
G

Which college are you from - it has a very friendly attitude! I was under the impression that even Cambridge undergrads should be on course for a first.

There's a lot to be said for investigating alternative postgrad options - BCL / or other LLMs to broaden your horizons, by the way.

Publishing as undergraduate

I've heard that it can be beneficial in applying for a PhD to have published a paper as an undergraduate - is this possible, and of so, how? I have a few ideas that I could expand into theoretical papers...any thoughts?

Is M.Sci enough?
G

At the end of my 4-year undergraduate course, I'll have (hopefully!) an M.Sci in Physics. I've read lots on this forum about needing a Masters degree, which I take to mean a postgraduate MSc.

If I have my undergraduate masters degree, will this be enough of a qualification to do a PhD or will I need to do a postgraduate degree first?

Presenting at Conference
G

Sounds a bit dodgy! Normally abstracts are peer-reviewed and it takes a few months before you get a reply. Will this be published in a Journal? It seems a waste of money and effort for little recognition of your hard work!
