Full-time to Part-time
G

Just start my PhD study recently and there is a job offer coming. Because I self-fund at the moment, is it possible for international full-time student to change to part-time PhD? How long is the Part-time research, 9 years? Is the tuition fee half of that Full-time one? Who knows? Please give some suggestions.

I tried to eat a friend's PhD once but he found out and ate my fish tank in retaliation. You won't catch me with me trousers..........

BBQ'd PhD.....

I tend to find the best way to while away the summer months is to barbeque your PhD and serve it with pickled tennis balls, mmmmm lovely!

Leeds

I lived in leeds on 6K, so 10K is plenty. Accomodation is about £60 a week, and leeds is pretty cheap for going out.

how to apply?

Well, if you look through the adverts in the database and find one in your field then you can write to the university. If you don't find an ad, search around and look for universities that do such research and write them stating your research interests.

Well, there's a number of universities that have money at this time of year, as well as industrial/commercial labs. keep an eye out on places like jobs.ac.uk and grad jobs sites and you can get a research assistantship for a year before youdo your PhD. it's what I'm doing and research assistants aren't too badly paid.

Conservation/ Welfare PhDs

I think you'll find this VERY difficult!! I have a First and a total of twelve months lab experience and lots of field/animal handling experience and I was still out-competed for conservation PhD's. I now have a fantastic PhD working with birds, but that was just total luck. Try the St. Andrews university website..they have a project working with birds in Africa but it they expect bird ringing experience and 3 years field/lab experience. Also try Southampton or Aberdeen uni's.

Studentship Application Process

Enclose 2 stamped self addressed postcards with your application and refer to them in your cover letter. On one card write 'your application has been safely received' and on the other write 'sorry, your application was unsuccessful'. That way you can track the progress of your application and if you don't get an interview, at least you are not waiting and hoping in vane. Good luck with future applications.

Why not apply for a technician or Research Assistant post? You never know, could lead to a PhD position later (did for me!). Good luck!

Thesis sex!

I always have sex with my thesis. Chapter 6 was particularly good last night. Thanks.

Hi! I'd like to get some lab experience before applying for a PhD. Question is how. I'd prefer to go somewhere else than my old uni as whole point is to get new perspectives. Is there any chance somebody would actually pay me for working in their lab? I'm a genetics student.

I don't expect to get rich, but for example enough money to pay the rent, while I take savings to pay for food would be enough. I've already taken loans to finance my first degree, so there really is no way I can simply volunteer and do it for free.

And if you don't think I'm likely to get paid, perhaps you know some place where the research is good and the living costs really really low? :)

Studentship Application Process

This seems to be the case. I have applied to loads and just never receive any reply. What I do is email asking on the progress of my application so even if the answer is no I at least know where i Sstand. Hope this helps

when to apply?
G

There are usually application deadlines so check the University prospectus carefully or telephone the admissions team to find out.
