Feeling So Down!

A: I don't really think the recent earthquake could be called a 'small setback' for Goldfish (!) - and he/she's not even complaining! You have my sympathy Goldfish. It's a really bad situation, but keep trying - you got the interview oportunity at Strathclyde so you're bound to get another!

phd in bioinformatics or applied mathematics

Ban, fear not ! I knew NOTHING about biology at all and I'm doing a PhD in statistical genetics. It depends on which side you view it from really. If, like me, you consider yourself a statistician with an application in biology, then don't worry about it providing you show the motivation as to why you want to do it.

Stipend and taxes
G

hey Leo. It depends if you're a UK student and who is paying the stipend. As a UK student getting one from the research councils, this will pay stipend (this year 12K min TAX FREE) and tuition fees. Scholarships will vary on the level of payments. As for living on 12K, well, it depends on your lifestyle and where you are living.

What do you have on your desk ?
G

I share a small office with 2 Postdocs (who are never here). In this desk is an array of papers, pens, computers, coffee mugs (not mine!) and a funny clock thingy! On my main desk (where I rarely sit) are post-it notes everywhere, more papers and folders, an old PC that has been dumped, a single pen (black!), a picture of the missus and a list of phone numbers.

Now if it's my home study, that's a different story altogether...

Hi H. The ligation hasn't worked yet. But I have worked out what the problem, and will be doing the ligation today, so by the end of the week I should know if it has worked.
Sam, I would love to move onto the next step. The trouble is I have done everything else, and now the rest of my PhD hinges on me being able to finish the small section.

Hi all,
I'd like to apply for a funded Phd in the UK. I read that the average stipend is around 12K $ pa. but I'm not sure this figure refers to an after taxes payment.
Do you think such a stipend is enough for 2 persons?
Thank you very much

I am interested in bioinformatics and computational aspects of statistics. Can anyone please provide more information. Moreover, is it appropriate for someone with little knowledge of biological sciences to enter the field.

Feeling So Down!

Thats not something to feel bad about. If small setbacks like these pull you down, then you should not be leave your country and go to a foreign country.

Late starter!
G

Age is not important and I think 28 is still young. I see a lot of Phd students around 30 ..... Go for it !!

Too old for a Ph.D.?
G

Never to late. Go for it. If you would like to do and happy to do it.... Nothing too late !!
