From which degree would you have a better chance of getting a job? which pays better?

I guess it depends on the type of research you are interested in. I am technician in a large cancer research institute, most of the students have degrees in biochemistry or biological sciences from good unis so pick your institution carefully. A degree with some type of placement will give you an advantage too.

Hi, I've done a mathematics degree and a masters in computing. I am now trying to switch to the biological sciences field (Molecular biology in particular), you see i want something hands on. I realise I'm not eligible for a PhD, but does any one know of any MSc's in biosciences that accept maths graduates.

Go! That's a rare opportunity and 7 weeks is really not long when put in perspective with your entire career.

is anyone scared it wont work out the way you want it?

28 isn't old, certainly not for an academic research career. Academia does have several advantages of really 'judging' people on the quality of output i.e., the significance of your work/publications etc. Unless your thinking of moving into industry where things may be a bit harder for someone 'older', I wouldn't worry too much. I finished my PhD at 26 and just went directionless into post-docs for 3 years, now I'm a little more experienced and war wounded I feel like I'm doing my best work, besides intellectual stimulation keeps the mind young

If your not too concerned about the finanical side of things and are looking to do a PhD in order to break into academia, don't worry about the age thing right now. However, I would look at what the main funding bodies for your field have to say, as you don't want to reach the end of your degree and find out that post-docs are not available for those over 40. Other side of things, get your PhD and move back into IT in consulting etc

Which degree carries more value, in the world of research: Biomedical sciences or Biochemistry?

Replies world record attempt

Well, not a great performance and nowhere near a world record but still a personal best!

Go for it ! Chances like this come up very rarely so make the most of it. 7 weeks out of 3 years isn't really a long time and as Stu says, you can always do some other stuff whilst you're there. Go on, shoo, let us know how it goes !

Sounds good. Go for it. It might give you some time to catch up on any reading and writing up you may have for your project

PhD Transfer

Supervisors often mislead students in interviews saying 'oh tes you can do this and this and this' when in reality that is not the case. The blame is not likely to lie completely with the student.

Hi Brair, how far in are you? Could you stick it out long enough to write up a masters and then do Ph.D elsewhere? Ultimately you have to do what is right for you, something you can live with. Many supervisors do not give a shit about their students, only interested in their career so watch that. Best of luck!

That was me. I went to University of Limerick where the Stokes research institue is. All i know is it has a good reputation but i am not an engineer. It may not compare well to other top institutions, it could just be that it is funded well compared to other departments in the University. I could not say for sure. University of Limerick's strongest area is engineering though.
