No research or spelling skills yet wanting to do a PhD...???
G

Has anyone heard of spell check. And how sometimes your brain works faster than your fingers? Or that maybe English is a third or fourth language for some. I don't you should judge people on their spelling or minor fixable traits. Sometimes its also hard to convey something in a different language, but then again if we had some smidge of understanding, this would not be an issue and we would be helping our fellow peers.

Feeling low
G

I feel like my thesis is taking forever to complete. I am afraid to hand anything into my advisor for she has ripped it apart with no positive feedbacks, while in the meantime she provides no support. I am not happy. Any suggestions on how to deal with such a situation?

Feeling down
G

I am also in the dumps with my advisor. However, instead of ignoring my e-mails, I get really negative feedback. I really want to do a PhD but she is not supportive, while other profs that I have talked to are. Its really hard when the person that is supposed to support you the most is so negative and abusive.

Things I learned as Master Student

6. Have a social life. You need some balance in your life, it will only benefit you in the long run
7.If you feel you have been judged unfairly, given an unfair mark, been treated ill by a prof, report it. It will not only help you in the long run, but the others that will come after you as well.
8. Have multiple advisors.
9. Be selective and picky about your thesis topic. Consult many people both in and outside your institution.
10. Don't let negative people hold you back.
11.(spell check also helps ;)

1. Make sure you and your adviser make a good match. Don't rely on reputation alone.
2. Look beyond the reputation of the institution you are applying to, ie. student satisfaction
3. Apply many scholarships
4. Conferences: go, see, present, network
5. Publish, publish, publish!

Late starter!
G

LOTS of academics start late - 28 is not unusual. I'll be 32ish when I complete (if I ever complete!!!!) and know lots of successful academics who started working around that age. My husband was 36 when he finished his thesis and it hasn't been detrimental to his academic career. As long as you can explain why you started late - just as you would explain any change of career - it shouldn't be a problem.

Hi out there,
I am giving some thought to applying for a phd next year(in molecular biology) I will be 28 then which means that I will be 32ish when i finish. Has anyone started at a similar age, do you think i will have problems building an academic career with such a late start?

Mina, you haven't really said what you feel about him. Do you like him back in the same way ?

My brain hurts !

I once saw Cilla, I was at a Jamie Cullum concert and she turned up. No Dale Winton or that bloke who does Lily Savage by her side though. I thought they were all joined at the hip.
