Well if such a relationship is started and ends badly, he will still be your supervisor at the end of the day. You don't want to ruin the "professional" relationship you have with him, right? It's a matter of your career. Another point, how do YOU know that he has never felt like that about any of his students before. The fact that he has approached you like this makes it all VERY suspicious.

i can sympathise with Kalle's situation. True enough, there doesnt appear to be any funding if you are a Euro! Disappointing really, considering a PhD research bit is supposed to be of benefit to mankind?? I mean it's not a selfish thing to wonder why it's difficult to survive a PhD. I have 4 kids on my own to deal with too. Not easy is it?

I did an HND in commercial horticulture, was registered to do MSc in postharvest technology, but now have intentions to do PhD. It's become quite clear that you dont need MSc, and i will just do enough to get a postgrad certificate!! (Costs a bit of dosh you know!). So no, you def dont need MSc!

Open yourself to all opportunities:-post-doc, industry, marriage, politics ect. The field is quite unpredictable.

Hi Guys, Thanks for your replies and reassurance. I think I am panicking because even after 12 months of research, I cannot quite imagine what a focused final thesis would eventually look like - and do not wish to waste my time now by reading info which will serve me no purpose. I guess these are common worries for most research students.

I think spelling is very important for PhD study - writing up a thesis would be a nightmare if your basic skills weren't up to scratch. But saying that, this is just a forum for views etc., we are not aiming to publish our comments here in a scientific journal!!
