Loser

You're definately not a loser. Keep on persisting...if you do not get funded entry for 2006, try for 2007. In the meantime, if you can get any experience relevant to your intended area of research, it will stand you in better stead for obtaining funding.

Research Council Studentship

That seems rather silly to me, I mean, if you've always had it paid direct before why can't they now ? At least I'll know for next year...

Hey ab. It's been said on a few boards before, but basically yes it is possible, even with some of the 'better' universities. Typically in science PhDs, a BSc 2.1 is often all that is required. For arts and social sciences, a masters is more than often needed, but not always. The application is just the same either way. And if you're unsure, contact the postgrad admissions tutor for where you want to apply and they'll be able to tell you.

I was wondering if there was anyone , who had gained a direct entry into a PHD programme in a decent university , straight after the bachelors degree. If yes , could they please tell of the procedures they had to follow and places that do accept students of such kinds .

Just get reading about your topic - it honestly does help. I have come up with so many ideas since I started reading, and it has clarified a lot about my PhD that I was slightly confused about earlier. Get over yourself.
