How good (academically) does your supervisor expect you to be?
G

Research is an entirely different ball-game (or at least it is from where I'm standing!) to the kind of skills used as an undergrad. Therefore, I think as long as you're not a dimwit, the expectations that a supervisor might have are more to do with your maturity level, ability to work alone etc. I think it's perfectly normal to be doubting yourself at the beginning, but if you *were* unsuited to that particular PhD project, it's unlikely that you would have been chosen for it. Hope this is helpful!

Where can one take the GRE test in order to do PhD in the US, do you know? Are there centers for that, how much does it cost and how to do to subscribe?

I think this place is a place of information exchange for PhD students from different countries not only UK. Let's just make the info the most useful as possible and not get angry about such small matters...

I wouldnt recommend joining several - maybe one but dont expect to have the time to play for the uni team. Your boss will expect you to concentrate on your work rather than playing sport.

Has anyone here ever changed their supervisor?
G

Thought I would ask as I am still having problems with mine 1 year in. Have spoke to him several times - things get better for a bit and then he goes back to normal. So would like to know whether changing was a positive or negative experience and if it was easy to do. Also if you kept the same project.
Cheers

I agree that people from outside the Uk need somewhere to help find funding, but they should not use this board as a place to 'apply' but to find useful information on where to apply for it.

I want to study for PhD in the US so I will have to take the GRE test. I'm a bit worried about getting bad results, especially in the general test, because I'm not a native English speaker. Will the institutions I apply to be able to tolerate a result that is a little lower than for US students? Surely, knowing words like "loquacious" (from the sample test) can't be the most important thing for a PhD in biology?

Starting a PhD in October and a bit scared!

Same boat - phew!

I just posted a question, what's expected of a new PhD student. How proficient are we expected to be; physics is a might be subject?

Am I expected to be excellent in my chosen area (solid-state physics) going straight into a PhD?

I'm motivated and willing to put in the work. What academic expectations do supervisors have taking on students?

Cheers!

so...how this all thing has got anything to do with PhDs?Is it useful anyhow?

How good are Universities?

The reputation of individual departments and research groups is far more important than the reputation of the university as a whole at PhD level. Do a google search for something like "research opportunities UK" and you might come across the Hero website or similar ones.
