dear neil, i know how do you feel,as i also face the same type of situation you have.there are 2 options for it.ignore them,if one is having good relation with guide and post-doc try to learn from them as much as possible.the second option is that try looking out at other places for your studies(secretally).Good luck friend

Wow, that sounds complicated...very specific indeed! I was just wondering...Have things gone better since then? Do you have feedback from other people, or from other labs?

It normally takes between 3 1/2 - 4 years in the UK to complete a PhD. The 3 years is the nominal length of time that it takes and it is difficult to complete within this time.

But usually overseas students have very limited offer that covers full tution fees and living costs. Students from third world country can easily take their higer studies if such opportunities are provided. if any information about this please inform me.

Does any body know how good the bristol uni chemistry dept is. I know they received a 5* rank in 2001 but I would prefer a first hand account of them from a current or past student.
thanks

Thanks for your advice. I would really like to work in the US in the future, so do you think it would be better to try and get a Phd in the UK and then apply for a postdoc in the US?

Hi Asif, you should keep looking for various projects available here in the UK. There are a few websites like this one where u can find the projects being advertisied. Hope, this helps!

...this can mean you waste a lot of money and get canned anyway! In the UK you stand a great chance of getting something you'll really enjoy, as I did. The way PhD programmes are run in the UK is a far friendlier environment - you learn many of the skills you'll need by actually learning them on the job, as it were. Plus UK PhDs take a lot less time, so you can start working off all those debts!!

Coming from anywhere outside of the US, you face VERY stiff competition, so anything less than top grades unfortunately does puts you at a disadvantage, I'm afraid. You will need to take the GRE and subject test(s) and achieve sparkling results to get noticed. Make sure you fully understand what you are applying for - most US PhD programmes dont really begin until after a year of selection - you enter a large yeargroup, take lectures, seminars, lab rotations and grueling exams before the final few a picked to go on to the PhD proper...
