Getting a second chance

How easy is it to start another PhD if you quit your first? I really would like to do a PhD in the field I am currently doing one in, but I don't get along with the people in the lab and I think I will quit. However, would this go against me if/when I apply for others as I quit for not getting along with people (not my supervisor, the others).

Quitting

How do you go about telling your supervisor that you are quitting? I have been in a PhD for almost 6 months, but I just can't work in this environment anymore. I really don't fit in. I like the project, but it has been clear from the start that people in the lab don't like me. I have tried to stick it out, but it is now making me ill. So, the only solution I can see is to leave.

Oops, just saw childrens ages so ignore that question.
Kids are surprisingly resilient anyway.

I too am a postgrad-parent (one and one on the way) and understand the difficulties this poses. Would you have to relocate or could you distance research? Who will look after your youngest child as (s)he is not at school age? Consider the expense of running two households. Just a couple of questions to consider. It may be wise to talk to your supervisor and explain your situation, they are often sympathetic and may be able to help/ advise. Good luck!

stinking interview questions

The one I always had trouble with was 'Why do you want to do this PhD specifically?' This proved particularly difficult for an interview I had where they refused to give me any background information on it. However, I am now doing said PhD!

Work Experience

I think it depends on the type of MSc you did (taught or research). I took 2 years out after my MSc before doing my PhD and worked in science (although not always lab science) for a well-known British company. However, it didn't make any difference when I started as I still felt a little awkward. I think it is more important to find a group that you will 'fit in' with and enjoy your time with.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I agree with Steve that it at least shouldn't be a deciding factor, but my thinking was that at this particular institution, they would presumably only want people for who that institution would be their first choice, and, it is for me, which is why I'm a bit nervous!

I was asked 'what do you expect to gain from your PhD and what are your future ambitions?'

Please give me any examples of interview questions you can think of!

Much appreciated, ta!

PhD funding
G

I graduated 2 years ago with an MSc from a British University. Since then, I have been involved in several voluntary positions with British Organisations, though my work was based in my home country : France. I am now considering to start a PhD. Would I be considered for funding for UK students ?

How they choose you
G

Thank you marinegirl!! It does make constant failure a little clearer!

People in other industries have told me that the selection committee are legally bound to explaining to each candidate why they were unsuccessful. Is this true? And is it possible to ask without irritating people that I might want to apply to again in the future?

I dont think they really care too much, its certainly not going to be a significant deciding factor is it??? If it is, then you want to be at that institute anyway. I think its just one of those things that they put on forms for the hell of it.
