Working in the UK and then going for a PhD in the UK

Its very easy to get a job in industry but I would do a phd first (so that you are not too old when you finish otherwise getting a job after can be extremely hard). Lots of companies like hiring eu people.

Having worked before applying for a PhD might make you more marketable. Although there are, I think one or two schemes around which allow people to work for a company but while carrying out research. One of these is called the TCS (Teaching company scheme), but I'm not sure how easy/difficult it might be to get into it. Also I don't know whether you would have to be British. But it would definately be worth looking into from the sounds of your message.

It has an excellent reputation and they are building a swanky new building for it. You will have no worries there. I don't think you will be affected by the merger too much either. Good luck - hope you enjoy it.

I just graduated from France and now have a Msc degree in chemistry. I was wondering whether it is possible/easy to start working in the UK in a pharmaceutical company and then get a PhD after a few years work experience? Are there PhD positions in partnership with companies? Has anyone done this before? Thanks 4 ur advice!

Things one shouldn't forget

When u choose your project, be careful that you are really motivated by the topic and will still be in 3 years time. And most importantly, the supervision. Is there anyone to supervise you properly? Can u ask anyone for help when u have technical problems, I think that's the most important, not to feel left alone during PhD.
And last but not least, make sure that there is someone to train you on the devices you will use or on the techniques that you are "supposed" to know. Or someone you may ask when you have problems. Because I think PhD is personal matter but it is still part of your education and formation. Learn the most u can from it.

Is it possible to get a studentship without an interview?

Unis outside UK

I would have thought questions like "which countries would recognise my British degree as a suitable prerequisite for a PhD?", "how would I secure funding?", "which institution has a good name for research in my subject area?", "what differences are there between the British PhD and ones in foreign countries?", and "could I put up with the cultural differences?" for example would be questions in the forefront of you mind rather than focussing on finding "the best unis in Europe".

I'm thinking of doing my PhD abroad, but I found I really don't have a clue as to what non-UK unis are good. Could somebody please help me by pointing out some of the best unis in Europe. Maybe there are a few international visitors on the site who could tell me the best unis in their country?
