your referees don't have to be from the field og Genetics. Just ask two of your old University Lecturers to write a reference for you. They can write about your qualities that would be relevant for a PhD.

I quite agree with that statement. I had a bitter experience with doing a PhD which has lead me into an abortion of the program because of iadequate supervision. I think if one is to emback on a PhD one has to have all clearification with regards to funding and supervisory arrangements.

Without wishing to whinge, does it seem to anyone else that 'who you know' is more important than 'what you know' in the search for a PhD?

I've got a good degree and masses of relevant research experience, but still haven't got even an interview...?

Maybe I need to offer 'payment in kind' to various heads of department......?!

I have just been accepted for a full-time MSc, which I intend to attend. I would like to get a PhD after that, but I would prefer it to be part time. How does it work? I am from Greece and I would like to study both here and in Greece. Is this possible in any way? Is there any way I can get funding for it?

You might want to take a look at www.daad.de (Deutscher Akademischer Austausch Dienst). I hope this will be some help. By the way, does anybody know if there are sites similar to FindAPhD (which is GREAT - thanks FAD-team!) for other countries. If you could post them on the forum I would be really grateful.

I dont think its true that supervisors wont take you on. Do you have referees from your medical undergrad degree? Lecturers for example? You must have done some form of cell/ molecular biology in your undergrad. Besides if you can prove your interest in a subject thats half the battle!
