information regarding phd in genetics
G

I think it would be difficult for you to go for a PhD in genetics after not having done any before. You would be better off doing a BSc or a Master's in Genetics. No project supervisor would want to take on someone with no experience in that field.

As for getting a job first, this shoudlnt be necessary with a good first in a good subject. Although experience would no doubt help your cause, i still think you will get a place without it IF you do get that first.

I am surprised that you are finding it difficult with a "predicted" first. You do not need to do a MSc at all, and should not take that option if you are good enough to skip it - its a waste of time and money. Just be patient; i had about 3 interviews before i got offered my place, and because one was so awful i considered forgetting the whole thing. Just stick with it.

Hie Kisak,
I am a french student, I graduated in environmental sciences last month from Geneva's University (Switzerland) and I obtained a Ph.D position in US, working about algal carotenoids as biomarkers linking fish and benthic organisms with Type E botulism. I leave France in 3 weeks now and am a little bit scared to leave friends, familly, good wine, cheese...

What funding ?
G

Using this site, I had emailed two universities regarding PhDs that had been advertised as having funding available for international students. Both replied saying it was not ! I would request the site admins to not advertise unfunded PhDs as funded , because it really is heartbreaking for some of us !

There are many hard working students with a 1st, MSc, experience, ideas, skills etc etc who can’t get a funded PhD and may be frustrated and possibly even jealous that somebody with a 2:2 has been offered one. Implying that people have not been successful because they aren’t ‘nice’ will no doubt make them feel worse. If that is all it takes perhaps you could do a module in niceness to improve your average grade.

Read the information on this site under 'PhDs explained' and 'funding', look at the adverts on this site and then look at websites for European universities .......

Steve is probably right but it's a bit late as I am in my third year. Do I do an MSc or try to get a scientific job (& experience) with just a BSc? Any advice?

I applied through find a phD actually. I think they realised that you don't need to be good at memorising facts and question spotting to have good ideas and technical skills. I also had good references from my project supervisor and previous tutors. It also helps being a nice person who supervisors want to work with. Maybe you should try it.
