So nobody knows? Intuitively, if universities base grades on internal standards, there is no point in having a national grade scheme. If the grade is academically meaningless then you might as well have an a1fivestarsuperduper certificate of stupendousness (A1*****SupDup Cert. Stup.) as a BSc 2.1. And why BSc anyway? I am not a batchelor!

PhD scholarships for Malaysian nationals
G

I am a Malaysian student who plans to pursue a PhD in the UK, currently I have been accepted conditionally to one of the unis in UK but funding is now my main concern. Does any UK organizations offer scholarships besides the awards offered to international students byt the university?

thank you.

Help! I can't be arsed

Neil - get hold of the protocols you need and just get on with it, otherwise you'll be sitting on your arse for months!!

What does it take?

I think its all about lab experience during your undergrad degree these days. Many students are choosing to do a placement year in between their second and third year, either in industry or academia, and i think it is a very good idea. I think that those of you who think you have all the right requiremnets (and im sure you do) are getting beaten to the post by students with exactly the same grades, but more EXPERIENCE than you.

BSc Grades
G

thanks for getting back to me.
should probably have mentioned that im in IRL, so not sure if the same rules apply. this proposal that u mentioned - i presume this is if u have an idea for a project yourself and u require a supervisor and funding? have no intention of doing that ! just intending on asking researchers within depts what they have going and send in my cv. actually another thing im confused about- my BSc grade was 50% which is pass in some places and 2.2 in others.. should i just stick down my percentage ?

Or whether degree grades are based on relative position within a class at a university or national standards over a number of years?

Will they pay anything? Sometimes, they require non-EU/UK students to pay the difference between home and overseas fees.
What is your nationality?

I applied for a studentship, after the interview I was told I was selected. References were taken and all was ok. At the last moment just weeks before starting I was told I don't quialify for studentship due to my nationality. They are happy if I pay for PhD (home student fee) but they won't accept me as home student for studentship. What disappoints me is acceptance and then refusal. Can i do something about this?
