yes. most of the univs ask their applicants being above 2:1 holders in their postgard degeree. I am sorry to let you know that it's gonna be very hard for you if you are gonna get a place with a score below it. But sometimes it depends on your proposal. EG. an Undergrad /student CAN get an offer or admission if his'her proposal is really good. So don't worry too much and concentrate to your proposal. You ARE entitled to be offered a place even if your undergrad resualt is not quite satisfying

Are there any academics who can say for certain whether the university that a person graduated from influences whether or not they will be offered a PhD?

Thanks Eric - that makes me feel a whole lot better.

Assuming that Karen means relative position at a particular university, rather than within a national cohort, if this is the case then surely it would make sense for people to attend universities with a less academically able intake and get a 1st (big fish in a small pond an all that), rather than get a 2.2 from the famous UCL? It could set up an interesting self defeating prophecy if people fight for acceptance to the worst universities, to be assured a 1st, which then become the best universities in a sort of academic boom and bust cycle.

I'm nearly finished my MSc and in the process of applying to PhDs. Im doing very well in my MSc but did not do as well in my BSc (got pass in honours course)for a number of reasons. Im now worried that this mark will go against me when I apply as most places seem to want 2.1. (which I think is for funding purposes as well as ability) Or will my MSc just cancel this out???

To clarify - Relative position in terms of ability I mean, i.e. if you are in a bright year group it will be more difficult to achieve the same standardised exam marks as if you were in a less-clever year group.

It's nothing to do with prejudice at all. Some universities in fact don't base exam results on raw percentage marks but 'standardised' ones so that your mark at the end is not a reflection of your hard work or ability, but of your relative position within your year group. It also stands to reason that where a university is taking in on average brighter students, the difficulty would have to be greater in order to produce the same spread of degree classifications as other universities; whether they be elite or former polytechnics.

If they offer you the position, make sure you ask questions like 1) Would you be exposed to a wide variety of techniques? 2) How often is your supervisor in lab? 3)Would you be encouraged to publish papers? etc, etc.

I recently had an interview for a funded PhD. I am pleased with the outcome of the interview but I had been a bit too distracted by answering their questions well to ask any of my own. I would like to make sure that I'm not about to make a serious mistake - what should I be doing to ensure that I'm not?

What does it take?
G

I am predicted to get a 1st. I have applied for a wide range of projects, have had interviews and have been told that I interview well, but I have not had any offers. Where am I going wrong? Do you now need a 1st and an MSc to get onto a funded PhD?

Some things in life are bad,
They can really make you mad,
Other things just make you swear and curse,
When you're chewing your life's gristle
Don't grumble, give a whistle,
And this'll help things turn out for the best,

Always look on the bright side of life.
If life seems jolly rotten,
There's something you've forgotten,
And that's to laugh and smile and dance and sing.
When you're feeling in the dumps,
Don't be silly chumps.
Just purse your lips and whistle. That's the thing.
