First impressions

I usually give a lot of respect to my gut reactions (as in the past I hae been correct on many occations). I would tend to think that if you have a bad feeling it is usally based on something. I went to a PhD interview in a lab where I had a really bad feeling - I turned down the offer of a PhD there.... I have since found out that 2 students in that lab have put a formal complaint against their supervisour.... I had a lucky escape!

Should I give up?

Sorry you're feeling this way. The way I see it, you made the best decision you could in picking your PhD; you liked the people at the time and the project looked interesting. So don't give up just yet and persist in what you're doing, at least for a few more months until you get your MPhil. Is there a student counseller you can talk to, and have you spoken to your supervisor about this? I hope it all goes well.

Should I give up?

When I first came here to visit the lab, they (students+prof) all told me it's good working here, the lab was well equipped and as I was interested in the field I finally made a decision to come here. But now I am here I just realise there is no direction, I am not really supervised, everyone is so busy they can't help me with anything. I feel completely lost and often ask myself what am I doing here? I don't know what to do.

First impressions

I relied on first impressions. When I came to visit the lab, they were all nice and say it's a good lab and so on, but now I am here, I just realised that they would never tell a student coming to visit their lab that it is not really good working there, because they must feel morally faithful to the lab. When I came here, I found out the truth...no supervising, left alone without a direction... Good luck and make a wise decision, but don't expect it to be really funny experience.

preparing a cv

well, my careers service people say do the personal bit as usual, then a summary of your 3rd year research project, or current research post before you do the education section, then list anyother research projects/publiucatins in the empolyment field before you ut your employment record and interests. it worked pretty well for me, look on www.careers.cam.ac.uk for some really good examples!
