heard that student cvs sent to professors should be extensive enough?how is it different from framing a resume meant to apply for a job?

Hi guys. Thanks for all your help. It's really good to get a second opinion on matters like this. And congratulations FindAPhD team on creating such a fantastic site!! To describe it as helpful would be an understatement!

I had six years between my degree and my PhD commencing and didnt maintain contact with my old Uni. However they were more than willing to provide a reference once I explained my eagerness to go into research. It may seem embarrasssing to email and ask if they remember who you were but it is to some extent part of their job. I would be very suprised if your uni didnt have a record of you somewhere. Your grade will tell them of your ability - all they really want is comfirmation of your attendance and that you werent a nutter..

how to get your own project idea off the ground

I similarly struggled to find someone interested in my own proposal and have now gained a place on a proposed topic working on something similar - however I have found it very easy to get support for carrying out some of my own ideas on the side. As long as thye fit in the story somewhere. Applying for advertised titles doesnt mean they are set in stone, there is a lot of flexibility once the funding is secured.

In my experience a PhD is a fairly solitary affair regardless of the size of your research group and mine is certainly no different from a job. Therefore it matters far more that you are interested enough in the subject matter to sit alone and think about it for years than what people in the lab/office might be like from 9-5.

Your best bet would probably be contacting people who work in the field directly. There are a lot of Medically Trained researches out there and I am sure if they think your proposal is good they will consider applying for funding for you as a PhD student to work on it. Good luck!

I'm a medic with little lab experience whose spent the past year failing dismally to generate interest in a neurodegeneration-based proposal. I've seen the odd MSc, but really want to get going on a proper doctorate. Any ideas? Some have suggested trying a standard topic and doing my bits on the side, but is this feasible, and how far from my preferred subject choice can I afford to stray?

Help! I can't be arsed

I seem to have got stuck in a rut of getting up at ten, sitting in my front room and surfing the net. I'm meant to be writing a lit review but i can't be bothered. Is this just a momentary phase (i've only been in it a week, last week i was completely motivated) or am i just a complete waster?!! Happy hardcore rocks

I worked as a research assistant in a lab in Oxford. The institute I was in had a great reputation and looked good on my CV but it was a nightmare working there because of the people. I felt so sorry for my friend who was doing a PhD there - she was misrable!

Stipend

If you have it on paper that your PhD would carry that stipend (and you probably ought to), you should present it to the university and state that they are not holding their side of the contract.

The Benefits

I am studying chemical engineering with applied chemistry and i want to do some sort of postgraduate studies, however i cannot decide whether a masters or a phd or indeed industrial experience is more beneficial.

muahahaha...i just got turned down for an amazing project in my home institution, with a really friendly supervisor, and great department. i think my institution is trying to get rid of me because i was unsuccessful for 3 different Phd schemes here. i have a first and a masters with distinction. annoyed and i would have preferred to stay here, but strangely have been accepted by cambridge now, to work in a horrible lab with some seriously good but serious postdocs. well, if it doesn't work out, then i will try and write up an Mphil, and reapply.
