How long wait for a reply?
G

I applied for a studentship. How long it takes for the department to reply? How long do departments take on average to decide about studentships?
I applied last month.

UK Funding for New(ish) resident
G

Hi,

I will have been living in the uk 3 years by this october, and am planning to settle here. I would like to know whether this would preclude me from any of the resident studentships starting in October?

Thanks,
Kehan

Have you tried the Biophysics unit at Imperial College London?

How much do I need to know?
G

I'm unsure about how much I need to know about the topic area I am applying for. It is related to my degree but I chose a lot of qualitative free choices rather than the straight science options, the PhD is a scientific course. I am good at the science aspect but I lack in chemistry knowledge and feel that this may make my application weaker. How much am I supposed to know about a topic I want to study in and is there scope to learn some of the background I may be lacking? Many thanks!!

Employability with a 2.2 after a PhD
G

I got a 2.2 for my undergrad psychology but after a MSc and some research work I managed to get into a PhD. Obviously I'm pleased but I am a bit concerned at the reaction I've had from some people that I will find it very difficult to get a post doc afterwards because of my 2.2. Have anyone else encountered this?

Doing a Phd in Australia or South Africa
G

Have a look for the Northcote Graduate Scholarships on the King's College London Website. I am currently doing a UK student doing a PhD in physiology in Australia and went through just about every funding/bursary advert around! Have a thorough search through JASON (as listed above) and apply for EVERYTHING. Good luck.

whats my problem
G

sorry to hear about the rejections; it's always hard to take. but don't be discouraged. there are plenty of students i know who have a 2:1 and very little research exp, and seem to get in fine. competition for the interesting phds is tough. but stick in there!

Can You Help?
G

definitely think you have done the right thing; there's no harm in applying. you sound like you have more experience than your usual undergrad.
sounds like you found your niche!

good luck with he applications! i hope you get in! (if you aren't successful, do a masters then re-apply for the following year)

Can You Help?
G

I graduated with a 2:2 in a Bachelor of Technology in Agriculture last year. I have had four years (on and off) experience within research. I wasn't planning on doing a Ph.D at the moment, if anything I was going to wait. However I have found a Ph.D. which I would love as its in an area of great interest to me. I have applied for it. Have I done the right thing here? If not, any advice? Many thanks.

do accept or not to accept
G

Hi, I think you should accept. I have a 1st class degree, and a year of experience in research and have been applying for a phd now for almost a year without luck. thats just my opinion, maybe im just a winger but anyway best of luck whether u take it or not.

whats my problem
G

I have a 2:1 in biochemistry with 6 months research experience at a good uni, and am now working for a good scientific research company. Im desperate to get a phd course but am having no luck. I either get no replies or a "sorry" in the post weeks later. I genuinely want to do all the projects i apply for and give my reasons but its not working. Is it just very competative to get a phd or just that I have the minimum grade required to do one. Do I need a 1st to get one really?

Wellcome Trust 4 yr Phd Programme
G

any tips on getting an interview for wellcome trust 4 yr phd schemes?

i got a first and a MRes (distinction), did a placement at Imperial, and i'm working for the MRC, but somehow didn't even manage to get an interview from my own uni (Edinburgh).

someone said having a Msc
could count against you; maybe the Wellcome trust discriminates against MRC ppl?
