I am a MSc student and I have been having difficulty searching for such infor. as posted by Rob & FaPhD team. I feel I'm burging in, but viki you would do well by obtaining a scholarship, but most importantly work/study part-time

PhD at a UK Uni

look for sources of funding from your own government first.

some university/departmental Phds are open to any students. there are also special scholarships out there aimed at specific categories of ppl who want to research a specific field, or are from a certain country etc. but fraid you won't be eligible for any of the studentships offered by UK research councils as they're offered to UK citizens only. my old MSc classmate from Canada is doing a Phd at Bristol now. so i think there should be a sizeable no. Phds you can go for!

Good lck!

Go for a masters. If might help you to work out if you want to continue in research or not.
I guess there's always an inherent sense of snobbery amongst the UK unis. i kno of 1 guy, post-doccing in australia now; his phd was in a MRC unit, although he got a 2:2. it was because he was a cambridge grad. if research councils stipulate 2:1 min, then, clearly, not everyone is always going to follow it, in individual departments, units, and establishments. big generalisation, but it could be true. there is hope!

dropping out of phd

It could be the case that they wouldn't take you again - it would depend on the superviosr and the situation involved with you dropping out. They wouldn't actually 'black list' you though. I turned Cambridge down flat twice, and they still come back to me.

I think (and know) that you would regret it more staying on in a PhD that didn't suit you, as it would make you really miserable.

Thanks.

Why not apply now? You have nothing to lose! Best of luck!!

That kind of depends on the subject and what you're planning on doing next year. Some subjects fill all of their studentships before easter, so if you want a place you'll have to apply now, unless you're thinking of taking a year out.

I got a 3rd for my first degree. My supervisor thought that was a bit unfair and took me for a masters. I am doing very well on the course right now and Im likely to get a distinction. The problem is I have to apply for a phd for next year. My refernces are good and funding is not a problem. Should I apply now or wait until september when I have a definite mark to show?

Nope, the University are funding me. There only are a few research councils which fund my type of research and they have a '2.1 or above' policy. The application form for one of them doesn't even have a space to include work experience, which seems a bit daft given that I think I learned way more in my 9 month research work that I did in my 5 years studying. Plus don't know if it applies in your case but I've found NHS employers are less likely to care about your degree class than are universities.

do accept or not to accept

I'm a bit confused. Is your gut feeling that it's not quite right for you because you think that you're not up to it? Or is it more because of the topic of research?
