I think this is a very interesting contribution by steve.Going to a prestigious uni like UCL, doesnt really matter.A 2.2 still remains a 2.2 anywhere. I had a 2.1 from a non-UK Uni and came to UK and made a distinction in my M.Sc from one of the top UK so called prestigious uni.Therefore, put in your very best in the M.Sc degree and prove to UCL, that u deserved more than the 2.2 you got in the first degree.Move on and stop dwelling on the 2.2.

So are you saying that a 2:2 from UCL is better than a 2:1 from a not so posh uni?

I am faced with the same problem and have been told that the best way forward would be to do a Masters and then move onto a PhD.

I am not sure about studentships but many universities will admit you if you want to pay full fee.

While choosing a supervisor, go for someone who has supervised more Phd students. A supervisor plays an important role in determining the time you spent on phd.
Experienced professors have a better idea about the practicality of the project.

As far as I understand, for acceptance into a doctoral program in Germany, there is no deadline - you have to find a "Betreuer" (advisor) with whom you would like to work and also determine if you meet the eligibility requirements. This includes language requirements and can vary. If you need additional German language training before commencing your program, there may be deadlines for that.

There is often a DAAD infopage in various countries and languages which briefly explains the application process for a PhD in Germany - you can do a search.
