3rd Honours and Two Masters
G

in uk vary hard. had 2:2 and found it with great difficulty to find phD. so i had to self fund. Also the fact you did 2 masters is not really a pus. I done 1 msc, but the problem really was my 2:2. even my lab experince did not help. best of luck anyway, thereare ways. think of selffunding or getting lab experince

Living costs
G

I am a student in Bath. I have lived here for 4 years and i have easily survived on £3000 a year, never used my overdraft. I have enough loan left over to have a pretty good this summer. Its all about not spending what you dont have!

Communication Problems with Supervisor
G

This is not unusual, but that doesn't mean it's not a problem. Tell your supervisor you are unhappy and confused. Tell her that you need to have some degree of control of your own PhD and you need to both agree on a plan of work. (Ideally work out want you want to do first and argue strongly for that.) If you can't come to an agreement and feel your supervisor is to blame, go and see the student advisor or head of department and express your concerns - it is possible to change to a different supervisor.

rise of the green eyed monster is a sad thing!

Good labs?
G

A word of caution... RAEs are for deparments, not individual labs. Some advice... visit the lab(s) you might be working in. Is it BUSY? Is it CLEAN and ORGANISED? And, more importantly, does it have the EQUIPMENT required for your research?

Old Projects
G

Guys
Some of your older projects which have been filled last october are still being advertised as current under project search. Is there no way you can remove the old projects which no longer exist, so we dont get enthusiastic to soon!!! ?
Thanks- like the site by the way :-)

Part time?
G

Its very difficult to work 9 - 5 M-F and finish a PhD full or part time. You will have to find a balance between work and phd. Any time spent on Phd should be deducted from work hours unless you find a job in the directly related field.
Employers dont discriminate between part- or fulltime if you have a valid reason for part-time.

Oxbridge
G

Almost every Oxbridge dept. is a 5/5*. Pretty much every department is staffed by leading experts. In response to the question, the answer is with considerable ease. Also, there's the consideration that Oxbridge Dphil/PhD`s are by far and away the most difficult to get into (LSE being the only possible exception). If most of the people on your course have a first class honours, it's likely to be a highly regarded course. As for not, well, why would you do a doctorate if youre not able to get a first?

is a phd from somewhere like uwe as recognsed as UCL?
G

The top universities, i.e. those typically found in the top 10 of the Times have VERY FEW departments that are rated below even 5. Generally, (wich few exceptions) the better the undergrad. reputation the better the research rep. and the more valued the doctorate.

Poor A levels + BSc 2i + MSc Distinction = Oxbridge??
G

On the Oxbridge application form, they do not ask for your A levels. However, for a competitive doctorate, they may not like the fact that you have only a 2:1. If your distinction is from a highly regarded university, this will REALLY help. All universities are NOT equal in the eyes of Oxford and Cambridge. Also, with regard to quality, no, the only grad. school that even comes close is LSE (perhaps Imperial) the other institutions have nowhere near the research reputations of Oxbridge-go take a took at the RAE.

Best of Luck.
