PhD and then what?

What is the benefit of taking a PhD? Does it give a better job oppertunity, more salary, or what?
Is it worth taking it?

Living costs

Iniatial costs are quite high ie when you arrive in the UK. The costs given by the uni are the least required. Sharing room with someone can lead to big problems so beware.

Do I worth a try?

Dear Sir/Madam,
I am an oversea student, this is the final year of my first degree(Bsc biochem), I found out our department homepage says the funding for non Euro are extremely competitive. Now, I am expecting a 2:1 degree for my Bsc, do I worth to try the application of this department. In addition, my department is quite good in biochem, it is rated as 5*, thank you very much!

Good labs?

Ask your tutors/lecturers for advice. see who they have heard of. They dont have to be famous but future employers must know who they are or they will be less likely to consider employing you. Your supervisors name is the most important thing on the cv at the end. sad but true.

I have spoke to the others in the group and they like his unavailability as it means they can come in late and finish early and both of them are now struggling with the end of their phds. I am capable of working alone (i have 2 years industrial exp) but I dont know what a phd requires.

Are social science PhDs worthless?
G

Try overseas. The international experience will be like gold. Try to get a job with some newspaper and write on topics in social sciences.

Is a PhD worth doing?
G

PhD is not worth doing if earning money is your sole motive. A 3 month diploma in Microsoft .Net technology will make more money for you than a PhD.

Good labs?
G

How do I know if a lab is good in its field? So far I've checked RAEs and if they've published a lot of articles (though I'm not sure how good these articles are). Are there any other good indicators?

One of the basic requirement for a PhD (course) is to carry out work with minimum supervision.Probably your supervisor is sticking to this fact.

What is 2.1?
G

Thanks Bob. Still I'm not sure where this leaves me. In Sweden we get grades in each course: G if we get at least 60% on the exam and VG if 80%. Suppose I get half of each so my mean is above 70%. What kind of degree would that be? (Hard to compare, I guess, but any thoughts are appreciated). This would be for an MSc.
