What is 2.1?
G

undergraduate degree classifications/grade
First: 1st
upper second: 2.1
lower second: 2.2
Third: 3rd

usually need a first or upper second (2.1) for your undergratuate degree for PhD place, or a lower second with a Masters degree for studentships.

Out of my depth!
G

I've just graduated with a biology degree where I took modules mostly based in infection and immunity. I'm now looking for PhDs in the field of molecular genetics, which is fascinating but I feel really out of my depth. Aside from reading the relevant papers, has anyone got any tips on how to impress at interviews for these, given that I know little about them?

You are not being realistic. You are being naive. I am sorry to say this.
Good uni might get you an interview for a research position but its you who has to clear the interview and get the job done.

Research proposal in application form
G

Hi. I'm in the process of filling out application forms for zoology PhD studentships. They've asked that I fill out a section detailing a research proposal. Given that I have little experience in writing one of these (which I would assume they would know), can anyone suggest what type of thing they want? Thanks

What is 2.1?
G

Hi everyone!
I'm Swedish, and thinking about doing my PhD in the UK. Could someone please explain what all these numbers, like 2.1 stand for? I know they have something to do with percentage, but of what? I would be very grateful if someone could explain this to me, as I have no knowledge of the British educational system whatsoever.

G

I want to go USA for Post Doc. I ahve done PhD from UK but I am Inndia.Could you please let me know some funding for the same

pregnancy?
G

if you are funded by a research council (studenship) you should be able to check with them. In general most studentships allow for a 3 months paid leave but not much else. My advice would be to try and time it to your last year when you are mainly writing up - thats if you are not already pregnant! If you are then Congratulations ;o)

To be realistic, uni reputation is an important factor in future career expectation, which students could never around. There are projects attracting me in many unis and there is always a compromise for a choice.
