phd in usa or uk
G

for USA, you woul dhave to take the GRE exam, and the application dealines are usually in december to like february, the chances of getting funding depends on the scholl you apply to, your gpa and your GRE scores. For UK, heck i am still trying to figure out that myself. but i would rather go for a phd in UK than in USA cos you can spend an entire lifetime trying to complete your phd in USA.

You should concentrate on your education - especially your degree and masters. You could go into a little more depth describing modules that are relevant to your application. Also mention any part-time work, voluntary work, or one off events/expeditions/field trips/research you have taken part in. And don't forget to mention hobbies and interests. You may not have a lot of work experience but I bet you have a lot of other things to write about - just don't forget to keep it to one or two sides of an A4 sheet :0) Charlie.x

phD procedure in Canada
G

Hi, Birte. A PhD in Canada usually takes about 5 years to complete. During this time you have to complete courses as well. Also, you will have to pay tuition (at the foreign student rate), but you can always apply for funded research projects and/or scholarships.

Not your typical background
G

I’m 31 and graduated with an MSci 1st Class honours degree in Environmental Geoscience in 2001. At the time I was disillusioned with the low wages in the industry so decided to join the Police. Two years later, I’m fed up with being the publics whipping post and want to get back into my science. Are there many people out there from unconventional backgrounds currently engaged in a PhD?

Dyslexia and a PhD?
G

Hello,

I am a MSc student and have a 2:2 in my BSc - I am also dyslexic.

Does anyone have experience of applying to do a PhD and being dyslexic?

What kind of entry problems did you face? Did you state your dyslexia on your application form? Did any universities comment on your dyslexia? Did you face any discrimination?

Are your sponsorship chances reduced? Or can you receive extra grants to help with dyslexia (i.e. for computer packages that can help etc)?

Also do any academics/university staff have any views or comments?

Thank you everyone!
