What Uni is everyone at?

4th(!) year seismology student at Washington Univ in St Louis, Missouri, USA. I wish I was in UK with all of you - I've been living in the US way too long!

Best things about PhDs....

1. I can work at home for 2 weeks if I want to. 2. It doesn't matter WHEN I work, as long as I get it done. 3. I get to study something to incredible depths, which I prob couldn't do otherwise. 4. I get paid to work in my pajamas on my couch listening to loud music. 5. I have all the resources I need for free thru the Uni. 6. It's pretty cool to work on something that no one else has... :)

I'm still new here, but have seen mostly whining and PhD-newbies on here... (believe me, I'm a whiner this week for sure!) I thought we might all want to put up something that we actually LIKE about our PhDs... at least so the newbies don't get so scared and so we "more experienced" might try to remember why we started (as hard as it may seem to remember).

So what do you all say?

abseiling - i'll have to rember that one!

i attempt to characterize the orientation and magnitude of mantle flow beneath the mariana subduction zone by looking at shear wave splitting. ;) (aka, i study earthquakes near guam) what do all of you study?

this week is characterized by doing one thing, realizing that one tiny thing was wrong, fix it, redo it, realizing another thing is wrong, fix it, redo it.... one of those weeks where you think you'll never get it and that you're not cut out for it... know what i mean??

keepin' on keepin' on :)

According to my supervisor Endnote is better but you have to pay for it but ref man is free. Apparently both versions are compatable so you can use both until you decide which one you like better.

Hi Sara, if it makes you feel any better it's very common for people in the UK to take longer than 3 years...although academic staff get a bit twitchy towards the end of your 4th year! ;o)

H, your Mum is a wise woman!

Try trial versions of both. I prefer refman - more powerful and easy to use IMHO.

It wasn't a recipe as such, Wickid told us how to make a choc cake in the vegan style i.e. replace eggs with egg substitute, use vegan choc (Wickid recommends Green & Blacks IIRC), soya marg instead of butter. I expect any good choc cake recipe could be adapted but maybe Wickid could give us her recommendations? :o)
