I sympathise with you as I also work for small group and have been the only student for most of my PhD. However, I am lucky and have a great working relationship with my supervisor so haven't felt the isolation that you're experiencing. There's no instant solution but I would encourage you to try to interact with students from other groups, it's early days and you could find some good friends. Mention to your supervisor that you are feeling isolated, he may have some ideas and it's best to keep him informed. Good luck!

i have only been doing this for a month now and am struggling to maintain enthusiasm. I am very lonely as I am the only person int he lab. I go through the day with no-one to speak to and its hard. The other students in groups are cliquey and no first years starting so I have no one else who can relate. My supervisor is very busy and I don't feel this something he can do much about anyway. is there anyone else gone through this who can give me some advise on it.

I have just applied for a PhD at Cambridge University. Whilst doing my MSc I didn't particularly get on with my supervisor and although I worked as hard as I could he was never satisfied. I managed to graduate at the top of my class, but now find myself facing a dilemma. The uni have requested a reference from my supervisor, but he has made it clear to me that it will be less than glowing. What should I do?

I am a M.Sc final year student interested to work in a competitive environment and do my PhD in United states. I am not a self funding student.

I'm applying for PhDs just now and have my CV honed to a perfect shape - but have no idea how to start a covering letter!

I will graduate with an undergraduate masters degree in parasitology next july (hopefully) and am applying for PhDs in the field of parasite biochem etc - but how do i start a letter?! all the mock letters my course provides seem to be for job applications, and it's not the same!
