Are social science PhDs worthless?

I think the fella above is being a little negative there. Social science is a broad subject area after all, so that seems a bit of a broad statement!

phd=job?
G

I want to do a phd but still need to define the topic in behavioural ecology, more precisely the adaptive nature of visual signals, the cause function and evolution of colour patterns... should i widen the subject or can I be specific in that field, what career is open to me around the world, except for academia?

Literature Reviews

Dear andy,
literature review means searching for all what have been done in the respective field. To start with u can go to bmn.com and search for the reviews there, from here u can get the key words in which u r interested. Then u can go to pubmed, medline, sciencedirect or the specific journal searches as PNAS,JBC,Biochemistry and like that.

Literature Reviews

One of my course last year was a Lit review and i'm currently doing another one as part of my project. A good way to go about it is to work out 'keywords' for your project e.g. from reading a general textbook, then use these to search PubMed, Science Direct, BiomedCentral etc as these offer plenty of full text articles, including reviews. I've got a feeling the mimas WOS ,mentioned above will just give you references rather than full text. Hope this helps.

Funding for Isle of Man residents?
G

I have recently applied for a PhD on the subject of novel drug delivery systems at Aston University. This project has EPSRC backing but I am ineligible for this since I am from the Isle of Man. I have contacted the manx government who have agreed to pay the fees only. Is there another council, such as the BBSRC, that I could apply to for funding who would consider me British rather than EU like the EPSRC annoyingly do?

What's it like doing a Phd in Biochemistry?
G

If you enjoyed your degree course and are still interested in the subject then a PhD is definitely worth considering. It won't be easy but the satisfaction of working at the cutting edge of your field will generally get you through the months when nothing works. As for demonstrating, the classes are usually easy to run and a good source of extra cash. As long as your serious about wanting to do research then a PhD can be an extremely rewarding three years.

Literature Reviews

A literature review is just an overview of what is currently known in your particular subject. The best place to start is a search on one of the web based databases like Web of Science. Also your supervisor should be a good source to get a few papers to start you off.

What's it like doing a Phd in Biochemistry?

I am considering doing a phd. Wanted to ask current Phd students how difficult they find things like being a demonstrator/tutor for undergrad practical classes and tutorials. Also, is it as stressful as people say? because i really like the idea of research into something i enjoy
