Messed about once too often
G

Having managed to get accepted for a (self funded)PhD I have spent the last 6 months battling their registry who have lost my application twice. I phoned their finance department today, who have told me 3 times that I can pay my fees in instalments. Today they denied ever saying this and asked for payment outright. This means I cannot do my PhD. Unfortunately I haven't got any written proof otherwise I would be straight down the solictors. Despite my experience with university bureucracy I am still shocked their incompetance. Has anyone else had this kind of experience?

Too old to apply?
G

I am 45 with a 2i degree in biology obtained in 1999.

I presume in my case I am too old to apply for a PhD - is it worth the effort bothering to apply, or should I be loking at, say, a Master's instead?

Can I get a phd from London and do my work in united states. if yes which programs.

PhD in the USA
G

Most PhD in the US are funded, but are not really advertised. The best thing to do is to find the uni you are most interested in applying to and a supervisor in your area of interest, (may also have pages on how to apply on the web), and contact him or her for information, problem is that there you have to pay for applications which can be pricey. its also likely to be 5yrs PhD as involves lab rotation and a masters, I think before hand.

What is a 2i degree
G

if you have a total avearge between 60-70% your moduals, then you have a good chance of a 2.i

Is applying a waste of time?
G

Actually there are many PhD projects which dnt require app forms, just mail yr CV. Its best 1st to contact the tutor of the project, by 1st enquiring about the project, then reply acknowledging yr interest in the area stating yr situation and yr competence. This would also be further aided with good references from your tutors, which hopefully would support u.Usually the interview is the tough part, but is the place to prove yourself. good luck!
P.S. if your work experience was subject related, you would have a massive advantage

PhD in Great Britain
G

In the UK you should be able to go straight into a PhD after a Bachelors degree, as long as you have a good degree, 2.1 or above. Some unis will accept 2.2 along with a masters but you will be competing with others with better results and would need to be lucky.

As your German you also stand a good chance of getting funding as your apart of the E.U. its always best to mail the unis and ask.

Do a masters or get a job?
G

It depends what you want to do as a career, doing a masters in the same subject will not teach you anything new, in science its usually used to change between disciplines or to become more competent in a new area. Also you should ask yourself if your are willing to part with approx. £2780 just for the course (unless the uni funds you) and wait for another year before you start full time work.

You can find a PhD research programme at the University of Nottingham Business School. Kindly give it a shot
