Who else has an ordinary or 3rd class degree?
G

Simple, go back and do your final year again (either at the same place or a different place). Its the only option open to ya really. Obviously, it will cost you money but im sure it will be worth it in the long run. I feel sorry for ya, but just explore all your options and keep your head up. The job idea may sound ok but you'll just end up being another lab rat - i'd forget it!!

Job opportunities after a very specific PhD.
G

I am thinking that if you do a PhD in a very specific area (i.e. an specific receptor in a rare bacteria) you'll close a lot of doors for future work opportunities. Am I right? I find difficult to imagine a company hiring somebody who only knows about an specific protein (even if he knows a lot about it). Any postdoc there?

How important is the supervisor?
G

I've seen many times that the most important thing to look for is how famous/important/havealotofpublications is the supervisor. Is this a rule?. I can easily see supervisors getting papers published all the time and not caring at all for the students... Is not more important the program you do?

How long does it take?

I can say that I contacted around 30-40 project directors. Most of the projects were gone or I wasn't eligible (I'm Spanish). At the end I managed to get 5 interviews and 2 offers but I didn't take any. Unfortunately I am still looking. Good luck.

Nottingham University have a great institute called the Institute for the study of Genetics, Biorisks and Society (IGBiS). They offer multidisciplinary PhD positions in the field of Genetics with collaborations from other departments, including Philosophy. You might need to do an MA in Research Methods before embarking on a PhD as most of their funding is from ESRC who require an MA in an accredited social science subject. Also, Nottingham is a great University! Good luck.

PhD for mature students

Have the FindAPhD Team got any comments on mature entry to do a PhD? Is it harder to secure studentships and postdocs if you have done some other jobs before research?

Academic Integrity of Universities

Who's best? Can anyone maybe post a link to the league tables for research published a little while ago? I can't seem to find them. I know your supervisor's reputation is more important but just would like to know. Charlie

How long does it take?

It's doing my head in too. I've applied to about 15 now & haven't had even a sniff of an interview. How many did other people apply to before they got an interview? I too have a wide interest, I'm interested in pretty much any area I do, which I think is a good thing, but could this be holding me back?

Am i good enough to apply?
G

I am an european student getting a deree in Marine biology next year.
I really want to do a PhD, do I need to get at least 2:1 to be able to apply?
As I will have an English degree am I still classified as European student or UK student?
The subject of my interest is very vaste, how do I choose properly?
Thank you very much

Ordinary BSc + MSc Distinction = ?
G

It was because I did badly on an honours degree course. Not because I couldn't understand it, but because after the 2nd year I could not manage everything, e.g. supporting myself financially, in home, studying etc. I got stressed out and I lost it and I lost 3-4 subjects and that was it.
