I was accepted onto a Phd at B'ham 6 onths ago, but have just been let down at the 11th hour as the grant applcation was messed up by them. I have a 2.1 from Nottingham Uni in Chemistry. Where can I go at this late stage to succeed now that I have been double-crossed?

Am I being a snob?

Don't worry too much at this moment. Maybe I can tell you my experience. I have got a 2(ii) many years ago. Then I have done a MSC while was working. Now I am finishing my PhD in B***** University in West London. It is not a prestige University. Ah employment! I have just got a job interview a month ago although I have not got the job. But things are looking up.

After 2 years of trying I've been accepted to do a PhD which wasn't easy since I have a 2.2. The University in question however has a bad reputation and is at the extreme lower end of all the league tables. My 2.2. has been a huge barrier for me, and I was counting on a PhD to help raise my employability in the academic world. I am worried that going to this particular University may not help as it is viewed so badly. They are the only place to accept me though. Any advice?

How should I write a CV for a PhD?

On the subject of qualifications did anyone ask to see individual subject/module results or your exam results from the second year? Would you recommend including these with a CV?

Nepotism, internal promotion or offering jobs to speculative applicants who have ‘formed a relationship’ with a potential employer is becoming less common in the workplace because people are aware that it does not recruit the best candidates. We would all appreciate it if universities published an admissions policy with a set procedure, code of conduct and equal opportunities statement and employed a modern, open, fair, straightforward, merit based approach to attracting and retaining high achievers who will in turn benefit their institution.

I wonder if universities and individual supervisors realise how frustrating and disappointing we all find the underhand, unfair, illogical and convoluted process that they use to choose PhD students? This site tries to suggest that applying for a PhD is like applying for a job, with a simple advertisement, application deadline, interview and offer or rejection process but the evidence from prospective students indicates that this is not the case.

I would like to say also that as foreign student I didn't have the chance to apply for most of the studenships and that closed a lot of doors. If you are English you shouldn't have any problem. Be flexible, enthusiastic and always keep trying. Also work hard in your CV and the covering letter /email you send because everybody will request them at some point.
Good luck everybody.

I think that in the case of Steve maybe the way he wrote his CV wasn't so important and he got the interviews because his qualifications are just brilliant. My experience says that if you try and you are flexible you'll get interviews. I don't have such a good CV but I managed to get four interviews and many invitations for an informal chat. At the end I didn't take any because one was in the middle of nowhere and the other didn't get funding. But at least I got the offers.... continues

Just stick with it mate, thats all i can say. I agree that it is a lot of work, and you're often wasting your time cos people just wont get back to ya. However, it sounds that you have all the right qualifications so you should be getting interviews at least. Try and get a good CV sorted and that should put you on the right track.
