Self funding a PhD
G

I have recently had the fortune to inherit an amount of money. I was just wondering how much it would be likely to cost should I fund a PhD myself? (I am British is that influences costs etc?) Also how much choice over project topic would I have? Cheers, Will.

I've just got MSc in Clinical Chemistry. Does anyone know whether it's possible for me to apply to Med school? I got a 2.2 in BSc Applied Biological Science

Your best chance is with an MSc. MRes usually ask at least a 2i as do PhDs. As it's been said in previous threads, an MSc usually boosts your 2ii to the equivalent of a 2i. You can then go on from there should you wish to.

I've just finished a BSc and got a lower 2 in Biomedicine. Does anyone know of whether it's still possible for me to apply to either a MRes or a PhD? Wanting to go into further studies but need to know what sort of options I've got

I can understand that, I just think it'd be useful to show the application deadline so that you at least have a rough idea whether it may have already gone or not!

Just for people who don't know that. Most of the chemistry related PhD's are funded by the EPSRC.

I'm thinking I should just tell them I was ill when I talk to the department.

From the EPSRC. Quote "In relation to qualifications, students must be able to demonstrate a capability to undertake and benefit from research training through to completion, to the standard necessary to qualify for PhD. This normally requires an upper second class honours degree, or a combination of qualifications and/or experience equivalent to that level. The University may use its discretion in making decisions on the suitability of individual candidates for research training.

The University is expected to apply the eligibility criteria in a fair and transparent manner, recognising that an element of judgement may be required in individual cases."

Thats rubbish. Its only the old boy network that have that sort of attitude - the sort of people who need to get out of the modern educational system and go tend to their poxy gardens. A first is a first, its as simple as that. In my opinion, its harder to get a first from a 'new' university because the support network just isnt there. Take it from me!

So do Oxbridge and Camford graduates have an academic advantage over us plebs with a first from ordinary universities as well as being rich enough to live in Poshbridge?

Josh, i can totally understand your frustration. It appears that at this stage, a lot of the PhD's advertised on this site are already taken - i know this for a fact. Actually, i have just checked and MY PhD is still bloody on here!!!! Thats just cheeky. In all seriousness though, im sure its just a case of whether or not the supervisers can be arsed to notify the team here that it has gone. After all, the site has served its purpose by then!!
