Just look around web sites of institutions you are interested in studying at and see what the relevant departments interests are! There's useually a search function you can use on them. Be pro-active!!

Why wouldn't the BHF recognise my 2ii + MSc when I applied to a PhD funded by them? The advert said 2i or equivalent but I got a reply from the supervisor saying they stipulate a 2i? Do I assume the or equivalent bit means the foreign one in this case? Feel a bit hard done by!

It's that '(or eqivalent)' bit I don't understand - does it mean a foreign equivalent of does it mean a 2ii + MSc (to be equivalent of 2i) or 2i + Msc (to be equivalent of 1st)?

Just a sugestion but how about putting the application deadline next to the studenship on the results page when you do a search! (Like on jobs.ac.uk)
It can get a bit of a pain in the arse having to trawl through and find up to date entries!
I've actually applied or enquired to a few, only for them to turn round & say the application date has already passed!

Hi, you get a lot of people on this website asking about whether you need a masters to do a phD. I am going into my final year of Chemistry and want to go to Leeds to do this. Has anyone got onto a phD course at Leeds with a Bsc first or second or does anyone know what Leeds are looking for in a student. Thanks

Yes it is up to the department who they let in but it is also their responsibility to make sure that the student has, or is going to have, the required grades to get in. Almost all councils set a 2:1 lower boundary, but do have exceptions, including illness. See section 3 of the BBSRC booklet on this site (see funding page) for an example of what the exceptions are to 'unexpectedly low degree results'.

I contacted the EPSRC about entry requirements and they stated that it lies with the institution who they give the place to. I don't know about other research councils however.

Should I state informally in an e mail to departments that illness affected my performance or in a covering letter?

Hello,

I wish to do a Ph.D in Medicinal Chemistry or Bioinorganic chemistry. However I have a 2ii. I know most deparments prefer a 2i, but illness during exams in the first semester caused me to under achieve. This in reflected in my grades as I preformed significantly better in the second semester.

I don't want to do an MSc if I don't have to. How can I convey to the deparments this information so my application will be considered fairly.

Cheers
