Just graduated....Want to do a MPhil..WHO CAN HELP???
G

Hi all,

I have just graduated with an Upper Second Class degree in Internet Engineering & Web Management.

I have been considering now for several months on what to do next. I do feel that i would enjoy doing an PhD but still not 100% on what to do it on.

Although my degree is Computer based (genera) im looking into continuing my studies into management and an MPhil possibly in "Business".

Is there such a thing or am i thinking in the wrong direction.

Any help would be appreciated.

Regards

Nima

Employability with an MPhil
G

You don't even need to say that you were doing a PhD should you choose to take the M.Phil. I myself undertook an M.Phil especially for that degree and have left my options open for the future should i wish to undertake the PhD - if anything it should stand me in good stead for a PhD

Search button
G

That search button looks a bit out of place on the front page. I agree it's probably necessary to have a bigger link image on this page to direct users, however it doesn't seenm to fit in with the rest of the site. Have you changed your designer? Bring back the old one - he was good.

Personal Funding

Beware of supervisors with no funding. Why do they have no funding?

PhD for people with lower class degrees
G

With a 3rd, i am afraid that you have no chance. Im being completely honest here. Its hard enough to get a good PhD even with a first and lots of good experience - there are a lot of very good students out there. The major research councils would not even consider you with a third and very rarely take anyone with less than a 2:1. My advice would be to do your final year again if you're really serious about doing a PhD.

Is this allowed?
G

No it says that they will give preference to their own students. That doesnt seem to me that they want to attract the best students irrespective of where they come from. Whats the point of even advertising this project?

That will be the universities who want to attract the best students irrespective of where they come from ....

Studentships for Africans ?
G

But if this african is a resident (and have done his master) in another european country ?

Is this allowed?
G

I have seen this posted here on this site right at the bottom of a project description:

"The position is available for 3 years from sep 2003. Preference will be given to recent graduates of [insert their own uni, department and specific course here]"

Seems a bit dodgy to me. Maybe the team here can fill us all in.

The subject of internal applicants was dealt with in another thread i believe. Its a touchy subject for sure but its only natural that there are going to be lots of internal students who want to stay in very good departments, but dont let it put you off, you're just as good as them.

What is a relevant discipline? Help!
G

Yeh good advice! Badger some people in the genetics department at your uni and hang around their lab as well to see if you can get some experience. Even if your filling tip boxes, its better than nothing. If you offer to do a 96 well PCR for someone, they will usually be more than happy to let you do it (i know i would!!)

.....and NEVER do a CV 'barage'. Any half decent supervisor will spot it a mile off. My advice would be to limit your applications and make them quality applications. Never write one email and send it to 30 people with your CV attached - it wont work i can assure you. When you contact them show some interest in their topic and demonstrate that you know a little about what they do. Even if they dont put refs up, go to PubMed and get 'em and read 'em before you speak to them. Trust me, you will stand out.
