An interview is always better in person but in general academics understand that this is not always possible. Provided you convey your interest in their area of research a telephone interview should be a problem if you ask.

Trying to apply for a Phd opportunity, I find it's really hard. Some prof. answer my email soon. Some NEVER! Did u think that's normal?

Hi, I've just started the 2nd year of a BBSRC funded studentship, but have not received my payment for October. Last year, although it took a while to get the first payment through the others automatically came on the 1st of the required mth. Is this normal because it's October? Has anyone else had the same?

Yes, lack of food colouring...yey! My mum wont let me eat M&Ms due to that fact, even though I'm 25 and should be able to make my own decisions.....

I didn'y give any advice, anon english. If you are doing a PhD in biology, physics, chemistry it would be expected from a student to be in the lab from 9-5 every day. On the other hand if you are doing a PhD in social sciences you might be able to work from home several days a week.
