How can i contact a supervisor saying I am interesting in its field of reasearch but with no specified topic for a project, especially because i am fairly new in this field, having studied slightly different, more general backgrounds, but have the interest to learn new things with the ability to adapt easily; does it matter?

I am looking for a phd related to conservational biology and ecology although I have a more general biological background. Is it difficult to get a place in Cambridge, what does ir primarily depend on?

For Al: Well in fact the DEA (diplôme d'études approfondies) is the equivalent to the masters and a little bit more. The Masters is done in 2 years but the DEA in 1 year. then comes the Ph.D or Doctorat or thesis for 3 years.

At the end of the day, how can Oxbridge be the ultimate? You're salivating at the prospect of entering this ivy tower, yet, how good is the department there? Is it all in the name? I did a masters at one of the best occupational psychology depts in the country, but there was a distinct lack of support. I did my undergrad at a 'new uni' and came out with a first. I think ultimately examine the department,not the name. My masters got me no where, my first got me everywhere!

Yes, of course. However, in my experience it doesn't make a difference as I goy a good 2:1 but no-one wanted me. Did a MSc and still no-one wants me. Patience is the key.

Is it possible to study a PhD without an MSc? For instance, can it be done if you achieved a 1st or 2.1?

try a MSc, bad first degree (due to illness) and five years of experience. The people that say I shoud do it haven't got the money to fund me. Individiual supervisors want me but where its decided by a panel I don't get a chance AAAAAAHHHHHH!

Hi, I thought it would be best to do a masters to get some experience before doing a PhD but found it not worth the bother because I have found thatthey are looking for someone with a good batchelors rather than someone with a good BSc and a MSc.
