What were you expecting? You're probably the only PhD student starting in that lab - so they won't be planning too much. Just go in on the first day, say hallo the lab members, get yourself sorted out and then ask your supervisor where to start.

I always end up agreeing with Stu. You'll be perceived as arrogant and you don't want to hack off the person in charge of your work for the next 3-4 years

However, it can be complex, especially for international students. I'd recommend talking to your local tax office and university money service, if you have one.

Have you all had inductions for ur phd? I havent had anything and theyve told me to go into lab and just start. i dont get it...

my supervisors havin issues at the mo and ive been asked to get on with it, which i dont mind i guess....but i dont know where to start etc. Maybe you need to read widely in order to understadn the whole picture and you will need to be aware of whats going on in other aspects of your research for your literature review, rest assured ur supervisor is not stupid...listen to em!

nah i thought it would be flexible so i could go into labs once or twice a week. Its jst that I work best from home.

Neil, I was laughing in my head when I read Imperial (in a demented way) but I guess you are not even based on main campus? I hate that place full of arogant gits.

It makes sense that you would want to see it, unless it isn't ready? I suggest you employ some tact when you ask for it (which you should do), as Stu says, you don't want to appear as a know-it-all and get on your supervisor's bad books.

I didnt apply for my PhD, my MSc project supervisor asked me if I wanted to do one and I said yes. However the admin took 2 months to get a formal offer out....rubbish!

Why would u hate labs? You must be insane? If you hate it that much then talk to your supervisor about it. There must be a good reason she wants you there.
