Getting on a PhD with 2ii + MSc

Sorry - re-reading my last post it seems unduly bleak - it wasn't meant to be. I just know from experience that some academics are prejudiced against applicants with 2:2's. Certainly taking a taught MSc would improve your chances, or better still a stint working in industry.

Time committments for a PhD???
G

Hi all,
I just started a PhD alongside my new RA post which involves non-PhD related work. Is it reasonable to assume a general 9-5 timeframe for the PhD? I want a life out of work- evenings & weekends! Also, has anyone else juggled a PhD with disparate work duties? Any advice would be great:)

I got a 2:2, but was lucky enough to get PhD funding from the MoD. I'm now a Senior Lecturer (New University) - though I do my best to keep my "bad degree" secret. It's not quite true that "YOU MUST HAVE A 2:2 TO DO A PhD" but there is an element of truth in it. A 2:2 will haunt you like a guilty conscience in academic life - so get a 2:1 if ever you can! If not - then an academic career is still possible but be ready for a rough ride!

Phd in Italy

PhD in Italy it is not bad, but your salary will be very low. Have a look of:

Why do a PhD?
G

I'm with you there H! That's exactly how I feel! Too young and too much to do to get married and have the kids thing! My mum is desperate for grandkids! It’s really ironic as when I was at school it was always “Education, education, education!” and now that I want to continue my family are like you need to get married! My uncle who actually has a PhD said I should stop wasting my time (apparently my subject is not much use!) and get married instead! What is all that about? We’ll show them!

I want my research proposal
G

I've just started a PhD in science and I have been told just to read "widely" based on the few sentences that were advertised for my "known" research project. I'm not new to this situation of spoon feeding in drips and drabs, and I'm uncomfortable with it because I'm a knowledgable student and don't need spoonfeeding. Shouldn't I just get it sorted and ask directly for a copy of the full research proposal which I would assume I am entitled to anyway since this it is I ultimately who will be driving my researchforward?

How long????
G

How long does it normally takes for admission officers in Uk universities to decide regarding the fate of Phd application?
