I'm doing an MA at Manchester and went through a similar process. You can apply to as many as you want, but the sooner you start, the better, as the AHRC application needs a lot of work and there's a lot of competition. You can't apply for the AHRC until you have a definite choice.

I think, you've got one of the most salient things required to do a PhD, good project. Others like shelves and/or PCs are only peripheral; you just can make your room a suitable office. As to time, it's all about management. Strict control over your time may be needed. Otherwise, perseverance is all what it takes to be a successful doctoral student.

Yeh I know what you mean, but when you get that satisfaction of getting published etc then its really coool cos then its all been worth it. I dunno... The research is difficult but politics within academia is alot harder to crack!!! Good Luck. Join some forums that are to do with ur research area!

give yourself a few more time before you decided to quit. in my opinion, a week is too fast, because you are just about adapting to your new place and situation. i myself quit my phd after a few months and after giving myself chances to continue working for several months (and later i found that the place and the time is just not right at the moment). so, give it a chance first ... do not decide too fast and think of it deliberately ...
