I'm PG rep for my department where I'm undertaking a Phd. One of my colleagues, and friend, has been doing research for two years without seeing a penny of funding from his supervisor who has recently got a new Phd student, who is funded, and has refused industry linked reserch even though this work would have been related to the Phd work... Naturally I'm over simplifying the situation but does my friend have the right to take any kind of action- in specific legal action?

I would like to find out if any Universities in UK commence their programmes in January?
How does one go about finding out which universities do this. Was offered a place in september but was unable to make it.

I have applied for a PhD, which says funding (UK/H)- can anyone give me anymore info on this? will there be any salary? also, is the 3 years of carrying out the PhD a long slog or can it be done in the routine of 9-5 give or take a few hours?

It seems that you were destined to feel this way as you had doubts from before you started your project. Perhaps the best thing is to talk to your supervisor, see what they say. You could try making friends on the new campus, you might find that once you start making friends, you will enjoy the project more.

I've just started as an RA whilst doing an MPhil (2yrs). I already have a masters so we're trying to get another years funding to make it PhD, but I'm worried about the workload plus I'm unsure if I want to stay in academic research. How much difference is there between an MPhil and PhD? Also, I'm considering lecturing for the future,how likely would I be to find a position like Assistant Lecturer without a PhD? Any advice/views would be appreciated as I have little time to get my application in!

Does a paper in say Nature Reviews Genetics count for as much as a paper in Nature?

Hi guys, I have just started my fourth week of PhD and it has been fantastic. First couple of weeks I was really scared, but mostly did reading up and practised a few techniques I hadn't done for a while. This week I have started off on my proper work. You're supervisor will break you in gently so don't worry. Try to meet with other new PhD students early on to share thoughts and fears with - it really helps.

Just started my PhD and am completely miserable. I'm not even sure that I actually wanted to do this/a PhD in the first place! I've had to move campus from last year although I am still at the same university. Don't know anyone and am feeling really isolated. Does anyone know if it would be possible to get transferred back to the other campus - then I could be based there but travel to see my supervisors when needed? One of them is himself based at the other campus. It's about 1hr 40 mins drive.

hey Liz. Good that you're thinking about things now, being prepared is always good. Another thing is to have a thick skin - you may get turned down for a place you really want (as happened to me). But persevere and it'll turn out okay ! And don't expect a quick answer necessarily either, it can be a fairly long process.

when u email the possible supervisors just add in a few words about how his/her work can relate to your third year project or write few sentences about your possible topic of choice. If u haven't decided on a topic then go for the listed PhDs which already give you what the topic is. It isn't straight forward but the more earlier you start the better it get.
