Experiments not working, or giving unexpected results. Other members in the group not pulling their weight, another uni is doing the same research as you. The list goes on.

Presentations

Hi Alex,
i recently attended a presentation by an experienced postdoc. She got so nervous she had to stop in the middle of it and leave the room so it isn't just new students that get nervous. My advice is to practice your talk well before hand. Beleive that you are the person present who knows the most about what you are talking about. Also realise that the audience don't know what you intend to say, if you miss a bit out or say things in the wrong order they don't know! Remember to breath deeply too.

Panic !
G

Hi,
i'm sorry that you're feeling like this already. I was lucky when i started my PhD as everyone was friendly and made me feel welcome. If the people that you work with aren't like that it may take a bit longer. If other new people have started they might be feeling the same, even if it appears they are fitting in well, so maybe try telling them how you feel. I think what you should just try and calm down and wait and see what happens.

Other than issues to do with lack of good supervision, what are some of the reasons why PhD candidates lose interest in their research?

Revels

Nothing beats the taste of a kitten being crunched up, feeling the blood and guts around the tongue. I hate Revels, but kittens are good

Should I stop talking?

Ok, i keep putting my opinions on the forum. You had the chance to shut me up, but you've missed that boat.

Any top tips?
G

First thing I will say, is don't expect instant success. It is difficult to get a project, so disappointment is likely. But be persistent, look around for projects you like the look of and enquire about them, email the supervisor, not the applications person they waste time. I found that by emailing supervisors, they took interest and invited to the uni, and i got offers that way.

Have you got a first or upper second? or a lower second with masters? The qualifications mean that experience may be important. In this case, you need experience that is slightly relevent, make it sound good, get the interview and you should be ok. I know that sounds like something Del-boy would do, but making an application look good is not a bad thing. Any experience you have is good, if you have papers published that is even better.

Is there any thing you wish you had known when you were in my position, about any aspect of application or phD life however random?

Too many graduations?
G

Graduation photos are certainly a scam. H, dont just bother yourself; stay put and start planning your next move.

Question
G

Yes with explanation. In the past people had teaching positions in universities without PhDs. However, there seem to be a flood of PhD holders in almost every discipline, while at the same time there are limited vacancies. Therefore, to teach in the university now, one logical needs a PhD

Don't get me wrong, obviously I think the coffee ones are great too but I had to demonstrate that there are fans of the much maligned toffee one (come on all you toffee lovers, stand up and be counted!!!)
