Why do a PhD?
G

Hina - I'm in a similar situation regarding the city my PhD is going to be in - it's a horrible city, but the department is really good and has an excellent reputation. Everyone has their own reasons for wanting to do a PhD - mine is because I want to work with animals i.e. with an organisation like the World Society for the Protection of Animals - for this, you need a PhD.

I started off in the lab, getting used to where things are, meeting other people, but most of my reading up I have done from home. Going in next week to have a meeting with supervisors - so scared too!!

How to get funding for German students?
G

Hi,
I graduted in a biological subject. As a German citizen I only get funding for tuition fees. Does anyone know of programs or organizations that offer scholarships so I can to secure my living expenses? Or are there any other ways to get money?

I've heard there might be the possibility to work as graduate research assistant, but that apart from this as a PhD student you're not allowed to work to earn money - that's correct?

Thanks a lot. :)

Master Schoolarship with not very good college result
G

Probably not, the competition for funding of international students is likely to be intense and there will probably be many more students with excellent grades.

PhDs Unfunded or Funded

What are the reasons for you being turned down for the funding? It must be due to not meeting the requirements of the particular research council, are you an international student?

Getting Started
G

Forgot to mention, one of my referees had to be academic and I got my project supervisor from my BSc to do that.

Getting Started
G

I did my BSc, then worked in industry for two years. Decided wanted to move to a slightly different field and easily got onto a MSc course. Now about to start a PhD in the area. It sounds like you have a lot of experience and the only other thing you need is good references so I think you should just start applying to whatever takes your fancy, PhD/research positions.

I don't mind the raisin ones but why did they have to sacrifice the lovely peanut ones....they should have got rid of the toffee ones coz no one likes those ones. I wonder who I could complain to...?

Getting Started
G

How??!!

I have an MSc and have two years industry experience, basically doing research project work (project development/initiation/completion etc etc) so doing this kind of thing is not new to me and I want to get back into academia but getting started is a massive grey area.

can anyone provide any good URL links/resources/pointers as to how to get started??

is it actually possible to re-enter education/research once you have left and is it a case of contacts within institutions as opposed to actually applying.

any help appreciated.

cheers

How did you get on?! Did you get it?

PhDs Unfunded or Funded
G

Dear All,

I am wondering what is the difference between a funded phd and unfunded phd (in terms of future career value)? I have applied for several funded studentships, but been rejected and told to reapply to the same institution for an unfunded phd. I am wondering if getting a first peer reviewed journal publication would help (currently preparing same). I already have an MSc with ESRC research training and three years experience as a research assistant. A lot of questions, but any feedback would be much appreciated.

Anna.

Working from home
G

Start PhD next week! It is mostly computational based with no lab work. Could I potentially work from home on some days? Any experience of this? Probably depends on the supervisor and student?

How Often?
