Advice from people currently doing Phd
G

I need some advice to put somethings into perspective. I have been offered the chance of doing a part time Phd, good project, department supervisors everything but there are a couple of glitches.

1) I am going to have to work around the job I am currently doing which can be pretty demanding

2)I will have very little or limited access to dry space (desk computer, even somewhere to store papers)

My worry is that, I am not going to be in a great position and would maybe be better waiting for a completley full time project. Am I being silly or could these limitations cause be problems down the line when I need to start writing or when deadlines are looming and I cant get on a comp to write. Input would be good as I am going to have to register this week.

A PhD should be treated as a full time job, you may struggle to cope if you are also working part-time. Better to see if you can earn extra money by demonstrating. Good luck with your application :o)

If you get nervous just imagine your supervisors on the toilet and that they are really constipated. They might be:)

Limerick

Ireland, the south of Ireland, bordered with Cork and Clare. Home of Irish Rugby. If you have heard of Thomand Park which is a famous rugby stadium it is in Limerick. Frank McCourt the author is also from Limerick as is Terry Wogan i think (could be wrong on the last one)

S, Don't be scared of doing something new and meeting new people. You will soon know that people are people just like you and me...we ingest, digest and egest. About the part where you are not good enough...remember they offered you a place and registered you as a PhD student, so that means that if you are not good enough then that uni is not good enough. You will be surprised that some supervisors have a Mphil/MRes or Msc, so you are good enough.

The thought of letting people down, and not finishing are the main worries I have. The meeting new people I am looking forward to. I start in november . Where is everyone going?

I was dreading the teaching I had to do (in the second year of my PhD), but it was alright. Most of the students are really nice, they didn't even laugh when I kept falling over the same step in their lecture theatre week after week... There was just one bad day when the students knew what they were talking about and I didn't. Prepare the material well - you have the huge advantage of having seen whatever you're teaching before them!
