My situation is a bit different as I'd bought a house before becoming a student and then moved - which meant a new mortgage. It was with the Abbey and they wanted guarantors. The mortgage stays in my name and the guarantor isn't troubled so long as I keep paying; however the guarantor has to show s/he would be in a position to meet the whole monthly payment. When I'm no longer a student I'll renew the mortgage without the guarantor.

Actually, the transfer process varies from one institute to another. But the most common element is to say how you developed your research to this stage (assigning reasons for all changes) and how you will carry it to a succesful end.

The transfer procedure usually takes the form of a viva, therefore the questions will be specific to your research. However, be prepared to talk about how you will develop your existing work to fulfil the criteria for a PhD. Good luck!

Method I used for molecular biology but that might apply to any subject: Look at research papers / reviews in your area of interest and identify which universities seem to be producing the best stuff... then trawl their web sites, look at the specific research groups etc. Even if they don't have positions advertised you could contact potential supervisors to fish for openings... etc. etc.

Nothing really for P/T study in terms of council funding, but some universities offer P/T scholarships.

Don't worry Dave, I shouldn't be having a heart attack anytime soon. I don't actually get annoyed, I just say what I think of what has been said on the forum, but I don't get bothered by anything on this forum, I just have views that I express.

A quick Google revealed that the Institute of Latin American Studies merged with the Institute of United States Studies at the University of London in August 2004 to become the Institute for the Study of the Americas. Perhaps that's why you can't find the ILAS anywhere? Best wishes.
