Hi, is there a similar site like this for other countries than the UK? This site seems very helpful, especially the listing of programs, but i would like to do a PhD in Australia oder Canada. Thanks!

Writing up thesis (social sciences)

Freddy,

I recently completed my PhD in history and am waiting for my oral defence. As far as I know there is none available as there is no structure of a "social science PhD thesis" besides the general guideline.

Do you think.....?

So you would email me a photo then Zoe?

Best thing to do is follow the advice at the bottom of the page and look at the RAE. It is very important to find good groups doing good work.

Medicine after PhD
G

In resposne to Hina: You are correct that the graduate medicine entry is to produce more practicing doctors. My point was just that anon should not worry about taking the initative and going for a place in medicine because even in the worst case scenario (i.e. not going on to practice) the MD would still help your research career. But i am of the opinion thet the graduate entry system should only be used by people wishing to practice medicine, not those trying to further their research career.

Writing up thesis (social sciences)

Hello
Does anyone had any websites which provide examples of the different types of structures of a social science PhD thesis?

Eg the types of chapters and in which order. I have completed most of my thesis -but having current (somewhat heated) discussions with my supervisors over where to place certain sections -thanks for your help anyway.

Are you saying it takes 3 years to search for a job once you have the PhD and postdocs?

...and you get paid more if you have a PhD and it's easier to get managerial positions (pharmaceutical industry) and when people are taking your name down and ask you, is that Mr/Miss/Ms/Mrs? you can say nope, its DR!!!

Aren't chemistry departments closing down because nobody's interested?

is it worth doing a ph.d.

Spending nearly 4-5 years in lab, only to earn meagre amounts of money, also sacrificing one's family life..what to u think, is it really worth doing a ph.d.

I understand your point FindAPhD Team, I was jealous that the business people have a whole section to post on the forum whilst we (the scientists) dont. I agree with Stu, Chemistry is the King of the sciences and you need to be highly intelligent to be a chemist. The fact that loads of academic chemistry departments are closing down shows that there are few and few intelligent people left. Anyone see the article (cant remember where) about Einstein really being a chemist rather than a physicist?
