"Yes" meant emailing/sending a deposit/saying yes to a very persuasive tutor who wanted to know why I hadn't replied.

Anyway, now I've chosen one, I’m worried that I might be charged/sued by the other two. Which would serve me right but would be pretty horrific.
I guess the other option is to become an action hero and do all three at once.

You'll have to be persistent and keep on asking. Sussex should pay me every 3 months but they sometimes forget to ... in june they forgot, but said that they would pay double in July. Go to the stidents accounts office (or what ever it is called at your uni) and don't take a we don't know for an answer. As the funding body won't pay you directly (or your supervisor) you to find the university office responcible for payments.

If persistence doesn't get you there ask the head of your department for some help in putting pressure on the uni to get things sorted. It might not work, but worth a try.

Dear Sirs (and non-sirs), Was just wondering about the different reasons people choose to do a PhD in their area (Apart from wanting to move to a "nicer" country that is). For me, I need a PhD to get a decent job in industry and have no intention of becoming an academic. I also really enjoy research and it's a good way of delaying the whole marriage process for another 3 years and annoying my parents at the same time. Is that bad? How about everyone else?

I know how you feel - I hardly see anyone in the dept! Hopefully as most PhD students start in October there will be new people to chat to. At least that's what I'm hoping as I'm getting very bored I might have to start talking to myself! It's really weird starting in the middle of the summer especially if you have been working! What about flatmates? Do you have any that you could do things with?

I agree with Stu - I sometimes wonder how these people get onto degrees! I had a guy who used to be always late with his work alot but got away with it as he went through the dept from undergrad to MSc!
