How about a new category "PhD wanted in..."? A bit of simple programming and all "I am looking for a PhD in ..." messages could be punted there automatically?!

hardline zoe! Its sad that for a number of factors, lots of bright graduates go into jobs, whilst the rest stay in academia! Cutting the number of pointless, unemployable degree courses at former polys might help...

Mia, Does this thesis in socio-economic impact of moving sofa's you speak of have funding? I expect at least 25,000 per year, a house with a swimming pool and a company car. Thanking you.

As an overseas student I spent over 15,000p for my education, which came from my parents. My question is..why do some UK uni take students that cannot pull their weigh? and why are some courses just full of these people. Some of them are reprobates...they use to fart, don't say sorry but that it was a gift from God.

Most of them are usually sick when it was time to have group meetings. They would call up to say that they have TEMPERATURE. It was amazing to me that5/6 members would I have the same sickness at the same time. I came to the conclusion that these people had a gene for fever that was continually expressed but repressed in the rest of us. Not only that they were disrespectful and always harassing other students. By january most of the good students dropped the course because of these people.

During my Msc, I had to work with some of these students from [COUNTRY NAME REMOVED BY MODERATOR]. What I notice was that they didn't read a lot. They expected that other persons should read and them tell them what to do. I found this ridiculus and irritating. Not only that they didn't even know the difference between a title page and an acknowledgement. They were spitful as well. I was very disappointed and miserable during my course. I expected to gain so much from a UK Uni only to be held back by people who's ambition was to work in McDonalds and Burger King.

When will I get any money!!
G

Hi Alex, I'm funded by the BBSRC and started my PhD on 1st Sept. I also had a starting certificate that had been sent to my home address that had to be returned to them before I started. I know the BBSRC normally pay quarterly from 1st October unless a request for a student to start earlier has been approved. My supervisor did this so I receieved money last week. If your supervisor didn't say you were starting earlier you probably won't get money until 1st week october. Hope this helps, good luck

Reading papers

Yes Tim, that is exactly what a review article is. Usually there are no experiments included and the author(s) are well known in their field. They will have the correct references of the papers they cite so if you would like to know more you can look for the reference mentioned. I'm doing a molecular biology PhD, so if I'm looking for a review I type "review" and whatever I am looking fot, like " V(D)J" into the search engine of PubMed.

PhD Offer

Thanks Nick. I think it is more competitive for international students and funding is the problem for us. My interview was by telephone so there was a bit of disadvantage. May be the offer process for us might take longer.

A question-what exactly is a review article is this a summary of work carried out in a field?

haha, half the people on these threads sound like they need lobotomies rather than PhDs! I particularly enjoy seeing the posts which demand/expect funding based on the fact they live in India and use capital letters a lot.
