I think you will find there will be a big difference in how much work you need to put in to pass. For example, I found my UG course much more difficult to the Masters. My UG degree was from one of the "red brick" unis and the masters uni is ranked in the twenties.

I used to play this game with my brother but the items you could be were generally not very nice.

Could you do it as a distance-PhD, i.e work from home only going in when you need to see the supervisor, or is home just too far away?

Is there anyone else you could talk to in your department? Like a postdoc or maybe the graduate tutor (not sure if you have one in your department).

It seems a shame to give up something you had such high hopes for but then again doing it for 3 years whilst you are uncertain could be a lot worse.

I don't think this is just something that guys do. I know for a fact I can be quite closed about things that bother me. My bloke often says I wont tell him if something is wrong but thats just the way I am, sometimes I don't want to talk about it and resolve it myself.
